How Tesla Updates Work
Tesla is the only automaker that regularly delivers significant new features and improvements via over-the-air (OTA) software updates. Like your smartphone, your Tesla downloads updates over WiFi and installs them while parked -- no dealer visit required.
Updates roll out in stages: first to Tesla employees, then to early adopters who opt into the "Advanced" update preference, and finally to all vehicles. This staged approach catches any issues before they reach the broader fleet. You can check for updates in Settings > Software on your touchscreen.
To receive updates faster, connect your Tesla to WiFi regularly (home WiFi is best), and set your update preference to "Advanced" in Settings > Software. Updates typically range from 500MB to 3GB and take 25-45 minutes to install.

Types of Improvements
Performance: Tesla has unlocked additional horsepower, improved acceleration, and increased range through software alone. The Model 3 Performance gained 50 hp via a 2025 update at no charge.
Safety: Autopilot and FSD improvements, new collision avoidance features, and enhanced emergency braking are regularly updated to make driving safer.
Entertainment: New streaming apps, games, karaoke, and media features keep the in-car experience fresh. Tesla Theater supports Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, and more while parked.
