How the Robotaxi Service Works

Tesla's robotaxi service began carrying paying riders in Austin in June 2025, initially using Model Y vehicles running unsupervised autonomous software within a geofenced service area, with safety monitoring. Riders hail a car from Tesla's app, much like Uber — except no one is driving.

The Cybercab

Unveiled at the "We, Robot" event in October 2024, the Cybercab is Tesla's first vehicle designed with no driver in mind: two seats, butterfly doors, no steering wheel or pedals, and wireless inductive charging. Tesla's stated target price is under $30,000, with volume production planned at Gigafactory Texas.

Cybercab is the economic engine of the robotaxi vision: a purpose-built vehicle with no driver controls is cheaper to build and operate per mile than converting consumer cars. Production ramp progress at Giga Texas is the single most important thing to watch in 2026.

What to Watch in 2026

New cities. Expansion beyond Austin — and into states with friendlier autonomous-vehicle rules — is the clearest signal of how fast the service scales.

Removing safety monitors. The path from monitored to fully unattended rides defines the unit economics.
